How to get rid of underground yellow jacket nest?
Q. I live in the suburbs (So no possums or skunks to help out) and I have an underground yellow jacket nest. I have found their main hole. It's about the size of a softball (The hole is). Now what? I have no desire to burn my house down in the process.

A. Of the suggestions you have gotten, use the flooding. Pouring gasoline on/in the ground is illegal and carries hefty fines. I happen to be very lucky in that I have Scrub Jays who love those insects so there are few around my yard. Most people dislike Scrub Jays but I appreciate their taste in insects. However, if I had the problem of the nest, I might prepare a screened "box" to set over the area and put cans of water as much as could be on the ground. The yellow jackets will drown in the water. However, flooding the nest will take care of it faster! (Or you might use a shop vac with 2 inches of water in the bottom and vacuum them out on a very cool night, perhaps even after dropping some dry ice in the hole to make sure they are… [cont.]

Can live plants live with an Underground Filter and pea size rocks?
Q. yes im planning on getting lives plants for my new 55 gallon aqurium. But what i want to know is i can still use a Underground filter and use about pea size rocks? UGF is just a great product, but i also have a bio filter running also! P.S. Do you guys also know how i can keep my plants alive for a long thing, bc the last time i got plants, they just died in 2 weeks.

A. Many people have plants with undergravel (UG) filters, but hardcore planted tank aficionados avoid UG filtration. They say that the downward current through the substrate is detrimental somehow to plant growth (something I've never seen any proof of), and also that after a while the plant roots tend to clog the filter plate (which I'm sure is true in many cases). By the way, "pea-size rocks" are less efficient with UG filters than a smaller-grained gravel, one with particles maybe one-eighth to three-sixteenths inch in diameter. You want it fine enough to offer a lot of surface area and to be easy to vacuum, but coarse enough that it won't get compacted. How to keep plants alive? How far down in the ground is underground electrical wiring ran?
Q. I live in a subdivsion that has underground electrial wiring. I need to put in a drainage line and dont want to hit my electricial.

A. call 811 (its a universal number to have underground utilities located) two business days before you start your project . electric services are usually 30-36 inches deep
