Science fiction fandom or SF fandom is a community of people actively interested in science fiction and fantasy literature, and in contact with one another based upon that interest. SF fandom has a life of its own, but not much in the way of formal organization (although clubs such as the Futurians [1937-1945], the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society [1934–present], and the National Fantasy Fan Federation [1941–present] are recognized features of fandom). Most often called simply "fandom" within the community, it can be viewed as a distinct subculture, with its own rituals and jargon; marriages and other relationships among fans are common, as are multi-generation fannish families. From Google News Search: "science fiction fandom" How did fandom come to be associated with fans of science fiction? Q. SF fandom goes back many years. Many members of the community dispense with the "SF" and merely refer to their subculture as fandom. It's not specific, but everyone seems to understand the word refers specifically to SF fandom. Asked by Brad - Fri Mar 30 20:24:25 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I found the following article on Wikipedia, and was surprised myself at how far back the term has been associated with SF specifically. I personally started out in the Star Wars fandom at age 7, and have been pretty much hooked on an expanded way of viewing the world ever since. Fandom (from the noun fan and the affix -dom, as in kingdom, dukedom, etc.) is a term used to refer to a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of sympathy and comradeship with others who share a common interest. A fandom can grow up centered around any area of human interest or activity. The subject of fan interest can be narrowly defined, focused on something like an individual celebrity; or wide, encompassing entire hobbies, genres or fashions. Asked by Brad - Fri Mar 30 20:20:57 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. No, the SCA and Amtgard have lots of filking. The SCA does straight historical work, while Amtgard also includes fantasy. One of my favorites was done to the tune of Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks about both groups. Answered by Jensenfan - Sat Mar 31 12:37:03 2007 Is there anyone in the "Plushie" community or a Plushophile or the Furry subculture??
Q. A plushophile is a person who has a paraphilia for large soft furry toys, or plushies. However, a plushophile does not always have to have such an attraction to fall under this category. A loving relationship with a plushie may also indicate a plushophile. The term Furry is used to describe a specific genre of fantasy art and literature. The fandom for the furry genre traces its organization back to a science fiction convention in 1980, when a drawing of a character from Steve Gallacci s Albedo started a discussion of anthropomorphic characters in science fiction novels, spawning a discussion group that met at various science fiction and comics conventions. just looking for people to talk to in these communities. Can't say I am one, but here is a link for you: I remember my sister getting rid of about 4+ black bags worth of soft toys, so I guess she is a recovering plushie! :) Answered by Xenu.net - Mon Aug 28 05:29:41 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "science fiction fandom" |
