Conspiracy theories are often viewed with skepticism because they are not supported by conclusive evidence and contrast with institutional analysis, which focuses on people's collective behavior in publicly known institutions, as recorded in scholarly material and mainstream media reports, to explain historical or current events, rather than secretive coalitions of individuals. The term is therefore often used dismissively in an attempt to characterize a belief as outlandishly false and held by a person judged to be a crank or a group confined to the lunatic fringe. Such characterization is often the subject of dispute due to its possible unfairness and inaccuracy. In the late 20th and early 21st century, conspiracy theories have become commonplace in mass media, which has contributed to conspiracism emerging as a cultural phenomenon. Belief in conspiracy theories has therefore become a topic of interest for sociologists, psychologists and experts in folklore. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I can think of a lot of similarities. I want to teach a short class about conspiracy theories, so try to be serious. Asked by R B - Tue Jun 9 15:23:08 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. There's quite a few differences. Conspiracy theories are generally large, over-reaching conspiracies to try to cover up a secret, or get something done (sinister or not). JFK is the most well-known series of conspiracies, along with 9/11 conspiracies, Illuminati, the Freemasons and other secret societies. Urban legends are small, and have a much smaller impact. No one knows where they came from, as they generally happen to "a friend of a friend," or "one time X happened." They also vary greatly in detail. A popular urban legend in my area is that a homocidal maniac escaped an insane asylum in a bunny suit (it was Halloween, so no one thought anything of a man in a bunny suit). He then axed some people to death, or hung them off of a… [cont.] Answered by ksilver - Tue Jun 9 15:42:01 2009 Which conspiracy theories do you believe and disbelieve? Q. There is a theory that the origin of civilization lies at the bottom of the ocean, that there was once a great kingdom named Atlantis, home to the advanced and sophisticated society. The story goes that it perished in a flood around 12,000 years ago, but a few survivors escaped in ships and brought civilization to primitive peoples around the world. Some Atlantis theorists also believe that survivors who escaped the disaster went up the Nile River and resided in Egypt.
